Woodwinds
Why don’t my cane reeds hold up well
?

Cane reeds absorb water and the cane cells expand. When the cane reeds are played for a long period of time, they become soft and begin to weaken.

Suggestion:
Alternate between about 4 reeds at a time. Professional reed players may play up to 4 hours in an evening. After about 45 minutes to 1 hour, reeds may begin to show signs of softening, so it's a good idea to change reeds about once each hour. You can keep your reeds in a nice case, such as Pro-Tec model # A-251 for sax (#A-250 for clarinet). Each of these holds a box of 10 reeds, so that they all may be alternated. Retail is under $25.00; and, they come in three colors: gold, silver, and black. We accept phone orders. We also highly recommend synthetic reeds made by Legere. Some of our customers have observed that the Legere reeds project sound better and more clearly; and, if cared for properly, last many times longer than cane reeds (possibly years). Another plus is that you don't need to wet them before you begin playing. They also come in 1/4 sizes and are more consistent than cane reeds, of which you may find some in the box do not play well.

Problem:
Saliva can collect throughout the tubing of a horn. This can obstruct airflow and alter sound from the original design; and, it can also cause corrosion to form. Holes can develop in the tubing from this corrosion.

Suggestion:
It’s recommended to chemically clean your horn once or twice each year to keep you from having to replace tubing. In between chemical cleaning, you may clean your horn with mild detergent and water, IF YOU HAVE RECEIVED PROPER TRAINING IN THE PROCEDURE FROM AN INSTRUCTOR OR PROFESSIONAL REPAIRMAN. Come into our store, and our repairman, David, will be delighted to instruct you, not only in cleaning, but also, in proper handling and playing of your musical instrument. We pride ourselves in personal service.
