Meet the Staff...

Ellis Smith

Ellis Smith- Owner/President

Ellis began working for Award Music in February 2004. Despite having very little musical background Ellis learned quickly, and, during his time in the store, has learned to play Alto Saxophone, Acoustic Guitar, and Bass Guitar. Ellis was promoted to sales manager in 2009. In August 2011 Ellis took over the everyday operations of Award Music, acquiring the business from David Washburn.

Ellis attended Kaufman ISD, but transferred to Terrell ISD during his freshman year of high school. Shortly thereafter, he left public school and enrolled in home schooling, where he graduated in 2002. Ellis currently owns 5 instruments: a Belmonte Saxophone, a Ventura Acoustic Guitar, a Dean "Studio" Acoustic Guitar, a Yamaha B Bass, and an ESP LTD Deluxe EC-1000.

Ellis' favorite styles of music are: Rock, Alternative, Blues, and (Traditional) Jazz. His favorite band is Breaking Benjamin.

Ellis lives in Quinlan with his wife, Beth, and his two daughters, Kaitlyn (who is in band herself) and Kimberly. Ellis is currently an active Band Booster Member for Quinlan ISD.

David Washburn

 David Washburn- Head Repair Technician

David, a local musician, saw a need for a local music store.  That vision became a reality when Award Music opened it's doors in 2002.  David built the business, and his reputation, on customer service, helping customers feel at ease, and at home.  In August of 2011 David sold the business to Ellis Smith, but remains heavily involved with repairs, and serves as a consultant for Ellis.

David, a graduate of Garland ISD, began playing the clarinet at the age of 11.  He taught himself by playing along to Pete Fountain records, and quickly developed a love of Traditional Dixieland Jazz.  Through the years, David has devoted a lot of time to studying music theory, and honing his skills.  David currently plays Clarinet, Alto Sax, Guitar, and Banjo, but Clarinet will always remain his first love.  While proficient in reading, David specializes in music improvisation, or "making it up as you go".

David is a part of several bands in the Dallas area.  He plays with The Singapore Slingers, Kleinblass Musik (German Polkas and Waltzes), fronts his own band Dave Washburn's Three Quarters Fast Jazz Band, and performs solo gigs for senior retirement homes.

Josh Lalumia

Josh Lalumia- Repair Technician

Josh began his work at Award Music in May 2011. He has become very proficient with brass repairs, and is currently certified in minor woodwind repairs. Josh is a certified member of the "National Association of Professional Band Instrument Repair Technicians", also called "NAPBIRT".

Josh attended and graduated from Kaufman High School, where he was a part of the band program from 2000-2008. After his graduation in 2008, Josh attended Tyler Junior College for a year, where he continued his Tuba studies. Shortly after, Josh determined his heart was into band instrument repair.

His favorite music styles include: Indie, Folk, Rock, and Techno.

Brittany Sutton

Brittany Byars- Secretary/Sales Associate

Brittany was a part of the Quinlan Panther Bands from 2006-2012, playing flute at first, but later switching to Saxophone. While playing Saxophone, Brittany was a 3 time state Solo and Ensemble qualifier. Her dream horn is a Selmer "Super Action 80" Tenor Sax. Along with her Saxophone playing, Brittany also owns a few guitars including: an ESP LTD, Yamaha APX500II, and a BC Rich "Warlock" electric. Her main love, however, remains Saxophone.
